Sarcopenic obesity is the atrophy of muscle fibers with a decrease in total muscle mass, accompanied by excessive deposition of fatty tissue. At the same time, the weight remains at the same level. A new study in the US showed that people with this form of obesity are likely to be demented, writes The Daily Mail.
Researchers from the Atlantic University of Florida analyzed the data of 353 people. The average age of the volunteers was 69 years. Scientists evaluated muscle mass, body mass index (BMI) and the percentage of body fat in participants. Also volunteers performed cognitive tests.
The study showed: sarcopenic obesity increases the risk of problems with memory, self-control and orientation in space. Apparently, the fact is that excess fat deposits provoke inflammation and damage to the blood vessels in the brain.
