The botanical name ascribed to Brahmi is Bacopa monnieri though in some parts of the globe, it is also known as water hyssop, Bacopa, Hespestis monniera and ‘Herb of Grace’.

In Ayurveda, the Indian system of medicine, Brahmi has been widely deployed to treat several medical conditions such as nervine, cardiac, diuretic, anxiety, stress, vertigo, and blood pressure. The major phytochemicals associated with Brahmi are sterols, herpestine, saponin, mannitol, and alkaloids.

Brahmi is a creeping herb with several branches growing to about 3 feet height and the branches are often 1 to 1.5 feet long. The oval shaped leaves are about 8mm broad and 2 cm long. Marshy lands abutting ponds and streams are ideal for cultivation of Brahmi while it is not uncommon to find Brahmi even in high altitude regions some 4,000 feet above sea level. Higher temperature regions (33-45 degree celcius) with a humidity factor between 65 and 80 produce the best climatic condition for cultivating Brahmi.
