While you may not always have a cake on your birthday, the tradition goes back to the 17th century in Germany.

Children wanted some kind of treat for their birthday, and so many families could only spare a piece of bread, which was given to the child. They later became a sweeter version of the same thing, called Geburtstagorten.

As time went on, the wealthy people would decorate these primitive cakes with icing, layers, and decorations. During the 18th century though, prices of these ingredients became affordable for the average citizen. Cake began to see a rise in popularity.

But back to the question, people need a way to celebrate the past year of their life. And unless it’s your first birthday, you’ll share it with guests. Since those guests will want some, someone will have to divide it among the party-goers.

We cut cakes to enjoy that we have successfully completed one year and we are stepping into another whole new year. It also gives happiness, great feelings, enjoyment and fun because to cut our birthday cake. -mk
